No one wants to stress about the safety of their home and belongings while on vacation for the holidays.

Burglars look for easy targets, so try to make your home look lived in while you're away.

  1. A full mailbox is a sure sign you're not around. Have your mail held while you're away.
  2. Use smart lights or timers to periodically turn lights on so it looks like you're home. Outdoor motion lights can also be a deterrent for theft.
  3. Give a trusted neighbor a key and temporary log-in for your security system to check on your house. Ask them to take your garbage down, collect your newspaper, or arrange for snow removal if needed.
  4. If you have a security system, make sure you arm it before you leave. Give anyone checking on your house a quick tutorial on using the system so they'll feel comfortable with it later. Let your monitoring station know you'll be out of town and that a new user will be checking on the house.
  5. Be cautious in sharing too much information on social media.
  6. Finally, unplugging unnecessary appliances saves energy and can reduce  the chance of a fire while you are away.

Have a safe and happy holiday!
